Evelyn Frances Thomas Horton, 88, passed away on November 14th. She was born in Mayo, Florida on December 3, 1929 to Barney and Icie Thomas. Evelyn attended local schools and played basketball in high school. She met the handsome brother of her friend and fell in love with Russell Horton. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married on August 10, 1946. Evelyn and Russell moved around Florida and Georgia with Russell’s work assignments. They settled in Jacksonville in 1953 with their daughter and one son. They were blessed with three more sons. Evelyn loved every activity her children were involved in and was always present cheering for them. After the last child was in school, Evelyn became an “Avon Lady” and retired after selling for 44+ years. She enjoyed her customers and she considered them friends. Evelyn was a fabulous cook, renowned by all for her cakes and pies and crackling cornbread. She enjoyed working with her “flowers” and their vegetable garden with Russell. But most of all she loved her family, especially when everyone gathered for a celebration. Her heart was broken when Russell passed away in 2014 after 66 years of marriage. Her surviving family members are: daughter Carolyn Hinckley (Paul) and sons Wayne (Judy), Kevin (Jane), Terry (Suzanne) and Alan (Marie) Horton; grandchildren Kristina Brookins, Amy Miller, Clay Hinckley, Rosalind (Chris) Reinolds, Mark (Kaye) Horton, Mathew Cloud (Sarah), Tiffany (Adam) Benton, Niki (Mark) Martin, Melody (Brock) Lee, Robin (Armando) Luna, and Logan Horton; and 24 great grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be Monday, November 19th at 11:00 AM with family visitation at 10:00 AM at Gardenview Baptist Church at 3139 Armsdale Road, Jacksonville followed by a graveside service at 3:00 PM at Beulah Baptist Church, Live Oak, Florida. We love you and will miss you terribly, Mom.
