Newman - Betty L. Newman, age 93, passed away on the morning of July 25, 2025, after a brief illness. She was born February 14, 1932, in Dixie County, Florida to the late Emmit and Nora Butler. Betty graduated from high school in Cross City, Florida and shortly after married a Cross City native, Jesse James Newman, Jr. Betty’s husband, James, became a pastor of the Church of God and they not only served in missions in the Caribbean but later became “church planters” in Florida. In 1953, their only child, Jesse James Newman, III, was born in Gainesville, Florida. Over the years the young family was sent to set up churches in the Florida towns of Alachua, Gibsonton, Jasper, Fernandina Beach, Callahan, and the Hillcrest Church in Jacksonville, where they completed the last assignment of James’ career. James and Betty then retired and spent the remainder of their years in Jacksonville, Florida.
Betty is survived by her son, Jesse James “Jim” Newman, III, and his wife Sally; sister, Alice Butler Lundy, and a host of extended family members.
The tribute above was prepared by Betty’s loving family.
