Elizabeth Norton Obituary

Elizabeth Emma (Wanaquot) Norton went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 26th, 2023, quietly under the care of Baptist South Community Hospice. We will be forever grateful for the care she received during her final days with us. She was surrounded daily by friends and family from morning to night, where we sang songs, read scripture, laughed, cried, and worshiped.

She was also known as Mom, Momma, Granny, and Enrica. We recently learned that her Native American Indian name was Winona, meaning first girl. Elizabeth was born to Joseph Wanaquot and Minnie (Andrew-Wakakson) Wanaquot on March 8th, 1940. She was 100% Native American Indian with her mother being from the Sioux Nation and her father from the Chippewa Nation. She was born in Belcourt, North Dakota, and lived on the Spirit Lake Reservation in Devil’s Lake, North Dakota until she was between five and eight years old when her father took her to live with her grandparents in Red Deer Canada. She lived out her life in Jacksonville, Florida. She married Albert Norton in Jacksonville, Florida, and they had four children together. Elizabeth had a college education. Before having children, she was proud to have worked in the NICU unit at St Lukes's Hospital. Elizabeth, alongside her husband, Albert, owned and operated several businesses in Jacksonville. Most notably Norton Motors and Norton Auto Parts. In the early years, they owned and operated a grocery store, pawn shop, and a few others. In the early sixties, Elizabeth used to enjoy driving race cars in the powder puff division at Jax Raceways on the circle track, but we can assure you that she was no powder puff. She enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling; one of her highlight trips was when her son Joey and new bride, Katie, took her with them on their honeymoon cruise to Alaska in 2017. In 1995, she traveled back to the reservation to reconnect with her Native American Family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Albert Norton in 1992; her daughter, Ursula Norton Asay in 2011; and, her grandson Joseph Asay Jr in 2020.

Survivors include her three children, Lee Norton (Robin), Monica Norton Gloyd (Ken Gloyd), and Joseph Norton (Katie). Grandchildren: Alexis Tenneil Nicole Asay, Blaine Lee Norton, and Sophia Enrica Norton. Two great-grandchildren, Joseph Asay III, and Paige Asay. She was loved by many and always held a special place in her heart for her niece, Emerald Robertson of North Dakota; and her sister-in-law, Ruby Norton; as well as her niece, Lynnette, both of Jacksonville. All her friends at PSI were dear to her, especially her “bestie”, Ms. Mariam, who often called her Momma.

Graveside Services will be held at Norton Cemetery on Friday, March 3rd, 2023, at 11:00 AM, with her son-in-law, Ken Gloyd, officiating. There will be a gathering to follow and the location to be announced. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, March 5th, 2023, at 2 pm at 3933 Pritmore Rd, Jacksonville, Florida, for her PSI family and anyone unable to attend the earlier Graveside Service.
