Bruton - Elmer Bruton, Jr., age 79, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on June 11, 2026. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, disciple, and friend. He was born on November 21, 1946, in Jacksonville, Florida to Elmer Bruton, Sr. and Persephone Dukes (Jacob Royal).
He married the love of his life, Sharon Marie Bruton on April 21, 1967. They were happily married for 58 years, until Sharon went home to be with the Lord on August 14, 2025. Elmer and Sharon met on a blind date, and the rest is history. When asked about their first meeting, Sharon would recall that she did not care for his “tight, white pants”, but that he was persistent and eventually won her heart. The two were engaged after six weeks and went on to raise four children together.
Elmer was a hardworking man, who served his country honorably as a Lance Corporal in the Marines. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
In addition to his time in the Marines, Elmer worked for Crowley Logistics and retired after more than 25 years. After retirement, Elmer and Sharon traveled through many state parks in a camper, working as camp hosts. Their favorite campground was Crooked River State Park. They enjoyed riding through the campground on their golf cart, feeding the hummingbirds, and spending time with friends and family.
Elmer was born again on February 25, 1985. He served faithfully as a deacon of Cedar Bay Baptist Church for most of his Christian life and led his family to the Lord. Anyone who knew Elmer knew of his love for Jesus, and his tendency to say, “Father God” at least 10 times each time he prayed. Elmer loved to tell others about Jesus and followed God’s calling through multiple mission trips to Honduras, including trips with his wife and son.
Elmer walked through the gates of Heaven on June 11, 2026. He was surrounded by his family, with a picture of his bride in front of him. Elmer is survived by his four children, Angela Bruton (Zack Scott), Jason (Jean) Bruton, David (Casey) Bruton, and Christopher (Ashley) Bruton. His grandchildren, Kayla (Eric) Creech, Ty Creech, Autumn Bruton, Coast Bruton, Shannon (Don) Hyatt, Jordan Jenrette, Kelsy Perry, Jaiden Scott, Bryce Scott, Colton Gay, Colby Gay, and Hyatt Perry. He is also survived by his four siblings, Carol Barnes, Ronald Royal, Robert (Sonya) Bruton, and Beverly Bruton.
Elmer lived a full life here on Earth, but his new life is just beginning.
The tribute above was prepared by Elmer’s loving family.
