Frank James “Jim” Hershberger
June 10, 1941 – April 5, 2026
Frank James “Jim” Hershberger, age 84, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, in Jacksonville, Florida. Born on June 10, 1941, in Massillon, Ohio, to the late Frank Hershberger Sr. and Mary Allman, Jim lived a life defined by resilience, creativity, and a restless spirit of adventure.
Jim spent his career as a dedicated letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Jacksonville, a role that suited his "get up and go" nature.
Jim’s passion for sports began early; he was a standout star and high school football state champion during his youth in Ohio. He carried that leadership onto the sidelines later in life, coaching Little League while his children were young and passing on his love for the game to the next generation. A lifelong devotee of Notre Dame football, Jim spent many Saturdays cheering for the Irish and drew great inspiration from the leadership of the coaches he admired.
Beyond the field, Jim was a man of many projects. Whether he was tinkering with a new creative idea or hitting the greens for a round of golf, he never liked to stay still for long. He found immense joy in the freedom of the open road, traveling whenever possible in his RV to see new sights.
A man of deep and quiet faith, Jim was a devout Catholic whose life was guided by his belief in service and redemption. Perhaps his most proud achievement was his long-term sobriety. As a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous for many years, Jim walked a path of strength and mentorship, finding a deep sense of brotherhood and purpose within that community.
Jim is reunited in rest with his parents, his siblings, and his two sons, Jimmy and Michael. His memory will be kept alive by his wife, Carole; his daughter, Suzanne; and his grandchildren, Jes, Kyle, and Katelyn. He also leaves behind a wide circle of chosen family and dear friends who became his kin over the decades.
In accordance with his wishes, Jim will be cremated. The family will host a celebration of his life this July in Jacksonville to share stories, laughs, and memories in the sunshine he loved. Arrangements are under the care and direction of CEDAR BAY FUNERAL HOME, 405 New Berlin Road, Jacksonville, Florida, 32218. (904) 714-1110.
