Dunn – Gary Poet Dunn, age 76, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on April 1, 2026. He was born in Vallejo, California on January 16, 1950, to the late Howard Dunn and Frances Mobley Dunn. A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Gary served his country with honor and distinction, earning two honorable discharges during his time in the military. His commitment to service extended far beyond his military career. After graduating from Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Gary dedicated himself to helping others as a mental health counselor. His work touched countless lives and reflected his deep belief in the power of kindness and understanding. Gary’s bravery and selflessness were exemplified one day at work when he faced an extraordinary situation with courage and composure. A woman entered with a gun and took another person hostage. In an act of remarkable bravery, Gary successfully diffused the situation and disarmed her without harming anyone involved. For this heroic act, Gary was awarded a certificate of bravery by the Mayor of Tampa. Gary’s generosity knew no bounds. He found joy in serving at church and giving back to those in need. Feeding the homeless was especially close to his heart; he believed deeply in extending compassion to those less fortunate. Whether volunteering or simply offering a kind word, Gary’s actions consistently reflected his love for people. Family was central to Gary’s life. He cherished every moment spent with loved ones; whether playing cards, going to the movies, or simply enjoying each other’s company. As a devoted husband, father, and papa, Gary brought warmth into every gathering. His best friend Roland Coleman and Roland's wife, Resah also held a special place in his heart. Gary had an innate ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Those who knew him will remember him as a man who truly embodied generosity of spirit. May Gary’s legacy of kindness and courage continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Donald Dunn, Richard Dunn, Kenneth Dunn, and Jack Dunn.
Gary leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years, Julia Donaldson Dunn; children, Mindessa (Kevin) Grace, Scott Dunn (Priscilla), Gregory (Kristin) Dunn; grandchildren, Brandon (Danielle), Joshua, Noah; adopted brother, Keith Smith; many brothers and sisters-in-law; and nephews and nieces.
