Hugh Robert Young

Hugh R. Young, age 83, passed away on April 11, 2024. Hugh was born in Jacksonville, Florida
on September 21, 1940, to the parents of Alvis Oliver and Grace Nunn Young. He was
preceded in death by his parents, sister (Doris Hayes) and brothers (Rex, Clay, Howard, and
Gary). He is survived by his wife (Dottie Young of 61 years), his children [Gary Young and Kristy
(Dominick) Iuliano] and three grandchildren (Gabrielle and Chloe Iuliano and Liam Young), and
his brother Ray Young. Hugh joined the US Army in 1958 and served in the 510th Engineer
Company. He later joined the US Army Reserve to complete his service. In 1968, he joined the
Duval County Road Patrol and served there until the City of Jacksonville was consolidated,
where he transferred to the Jacksonville Sherriff’s Office. In 2003, Hugh retired from law
enforcement after serving 35 years as a patrolman and later as a detective in the
fugitive/warrant unit.
Hugh also volunteered his time as a baseball coach and mentor to his team of teenagers over
the years. He provided guidance and support to help many of those who were not fortunate
enough to have solid family support or the basic equipment to participate and play the game.
He always had a sense of humor and would make the best of the situation, while rarely offering
a complaint.
After retirement, Hugh took on a new role as an " Official Papa", according to his three
grandchildren and family. He traded his police cruiser for a golf cart and “patrolled” the
neighborhood. He continued to enjoy quality time with his family and friends, including joking
with his dry sense of humor, until his passing.
Officer Young will be cremated. A family Memorial Service will be held on May 9, 2024, at the
Jacksonville National Cemetery at 9:30 am. He will be buried with Military and Police Honors. Cedar Bay Funeral Home (Jack Blackburn) is making funeral services and arrangements.
