Leonard Daniel "Buddy" Wingate Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in St. George, Georgia, on February 26, 2025, at the age of 79. He was born on June 18, 1945, and grew up in Oceanway. Buddy dedicated his career to working as a crane operator at Mayport, where he played a vital role in loading naval ships. His hard work and dedication were evident throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Wingate Sr. and Thelma Lillian Caldwell, as well as his sisters Elaine Morrison, Martha Pyles, and Joyce Burke. Buddy is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Deloris Ann Wingate; his sisters Myrna Battan (Clinton) and Lennie Reece; and his children Teresa Veltri (Danny), Leonard Dean Wingate, Stephanie Layman (John), Missy Wirth (Jerry), and Timmy Reimer (Mary). He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Justin Waters, Charlotte Wingate, Keith Layman, Mark Layman, Melanie Layman, Kelly Wingate, James Griffin, Jason Wirth, Ryan Wirth, Tyler Wirth, Trevor Wirth, Travis Reimer, Jacob Reimer, and Thomas Reimer; as well as his great-granddaughter Jade DeJesus.
A service to honor Buddy’s life will be held at Anderson Family Cemetery on Cedar Point Road at 11:00 a.m., with a viewing from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Buddy will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him.
