Mary Newman Obituary

Greta Newman, aka Mema, has left her earthly home to be with her late husband, Gary Newman Sr. She passed peacefully on Nov 9th at Ascension St Vincent’s Hospital. She’s preceded in death by her parents, Ronald and Gertrude McIsaac, and sister Janet. She is survived by her sister Elaine McIsaac, daughter Sandy Boos (David), sons Gary Newman Jr, aka Butch, and Tony Newman (Betsy). Grandchildren Christine Boos (Jason), Jaime Johns (Anthony), Michael Jr., Carly, Connor and several great grandchildren she’s left behind. Greta was born in Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland, Canada in 1936. She fell in love with her late husband, Gary, while he was stationed there in the Air Force. They married and gave birth to Sandy, then moved to Columbus, GA the following year where Gary Jr. was born. Shortly after, the family moved to Lubbock, Texas where their youngest, Tony was born.

After a short stay back in Columbus, the family moved to Jacksonville, FL in 1966 where they finally grew roots. Shortly thereafter, Greta became employed at San Mateo Elementary School where she was Employee of the Year and nominated for Duval County School Board Employee of the Year in 1993. She worked there for 31 years before retiring to be a full-time grandparent, following all of her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s many events. She was happiest when she was working with and around children. This was shown in her unwavering dedication to her family and her education work. Greta had an amazing sense of humor and wit that had us laughing at every get-together. She was the center of our family, and she is truly missed. The family appreciates everyone's thoughts and prayers. They have been a source of comfort for us during this difficult time. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at 11 am in the St Patrick's Catholic Church, Jacksonville. The family will receive friends starting at 10 am. Interment will follow in Jacksonville National Cemetery, Jacksonville, FL.
