GAUDIOS - Mary Elizabeth Viets passed away in Hospice care on Monday November 23, 2020
after a recurrence of cancer. Mary was born in Bellmore, Long Island, New York on April 28 ,
1949 and moved with her family to Jacksonville, Florida in 1964 where she resided until she
died. Mary was a graduate of Holy Rosary Catholic school and the University of North Florida
where she received a degree in Environmental Science. During her career Mary worked for the
City of Jacksonville and the Department of Environmental Protection from which she retired in
2020.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents Robert C. Viets, Sr. and Theresa Curran Viets; her
brother Robert C. Viets, Jr, Sister Kathryn Beaulieu, Sister in law Rebecca Viets (Paul) and is
survived by her sons James Thomas and Christopher Francis Schmink; her sisters Margaret Silvis
and Christine Viets and her brothers Richard Viets and Paul Viets; Sister in law Joyce Viets
(Robert) and numerous beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Friends and family will remember Mary as a complex and creative soul with many talents and
gifts. Mary inherited her talents for creating decorative arts from her mother and will always
be known for the beautiful stained and blown glass she created. Many of her other talents
included ceramics and creating costumes for Saint Patrick’s Day, Steam Punk, and many
Halloween creations. Mary also inherited a love of music from her father and developed a
passion for playing the harp. Traveling and spending time outdoors kayaking and camping also
brought great joy to Mary in later years.
A funeral mass will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church located at 4920 Brentwood Blvd,
Jacksonville, FL 32206 on December 12, 2020 at 11 AM with Father Eikhuemelo officiating. COVID restrictions will be adhered to in
the Church. In Lieu of flowers please make a donation to The American Cancer Society and
Community Hospice of North Florida.
