Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Susan Marie Wilson DeGarmo, age 73, on January 23, 2026, in Jacksonville, Florida. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend who touched the lives of many with her kindness, compassion, and love. Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Dorothy Wilson; her husband, Michael DeGarmo, Sr.; and her son, Michael DeGarmo, Jr.

Susan was born on January 7, 1953, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She lived a full and beautiful life; one rooted in love, loyalty, and service to others. A devoted mother not only to the children she gave birth to, but to many who found a home in her heart. She raised her family and her chosen family with strength, patience, and unconditional love. Susan was a giver by nature, always there for anyone in need, offering comfort, guidance, or a helping hand without hesitation. She dedicated 43 years of her life to her career at CSX, a testament to her work ethic, reliability, and pride in providing for her family. Susan’s commitment and perseverance were a model for everyone who knew her. She cherished her friendships deeply and was fiercely loyal to those she loved. Whether family or friend, if you were part of her life, you knew you mattered to her. Susan had a special joy for simple pleasures, cheering on her favorite sports teams, the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles, enjoying a Philly cheesesteak, and gathering people together around food and laughter.

Susan is survived by her daughters, Dawn Lewis and Christine Chester; grandchildren, Brandon DeGarmo, Zachary Creelman, Alexander DeGarmo, Macie Lewis, and Kemet Vaught; and siblings; Jimmy (James) Wilson and Deborah Drissel.

Susan will be remembered not only for what she did, but for who she was, a true giver, a nurturing soul, and a woman whose heart had room for everyone. She will be deeply missed but will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

The tribute above was prepared by Susan’s loving family.
