Vanessa “Hanky” JoAnn Chewning, 70, was born on June 30, 1952, to the late Henry L. Howard and Barbara J. Herbert and was raised by her grandparents, Fannie & George Howard. Hanky was baptized into the Lord at Lake Forest church of Christ over 10 years ago and she went to be with Him on January 9, 2023. Hanky loved spending time with her family and devoted husband of nearly 53 years, James “Peewee” Vernon Chewning. They married on September 23, 1970. She was funny, unique, outspoken, and her colorful personality will be sorely missed by all her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents, mother, and father; daughter, Misty Renee; son, James Darren, and brother, James Wolfe.
Survivors include her husband, James Vernon Chewning; children, Barbara Griffin (Jeff), Samantha Brewer (Jeff), Dakota Wilson; grandchildren, Emily Solomon (Chris), Jeffrey Griffin (Erin), Ryleigh & Cohen Chandler, Mikel Griffin, Jaxen & Sela Brewer, Misty, Madelyn, & Noah Wilson; great grandchildren, Lyla & Lucas Solomon; siblings, Bud & George Howard; cousin, Joyce Foust and a host of other family and friends.
Services will be held Monday, January 16, 2023, at 10 am at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road in Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, a charity that Hanky supported.
