Walter John Longman, Jr., passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at the age of 93. He was born in Herrin, Illinois in 1930 to the late Walter and Ida (Hiller) Longman and has lived in Jacksonville since 1992. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years Shirley Stroud Longman and his grandson Jonathon Wayne Longman. Walter had a keen intellect and was a voracious reader. He was interested in a variety of subjects from math and science to history, but above all he had a passion for studying God’s Word. He was a veteran and worked as an electrician in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a brilliant electrician - he could fix anything mechanical or electrical – and tirelessly used his skills to help those in need. Walter was a member of Heavenly Heights Baptist Church of Jacksonville, and he was a Bible teacher and enjoyed preaching the word of GOD for many years. He loved fishing, and spending time with family and friends. His life verse was Luke 16:10 where Jesus said, “say: ‘We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.’” This verse describes Walter’s life – he was a humble, faithful servant of Christ who did his duty until the end. Survivors include his sons, Jonathan Wayne Longman, II, Albert Wayne Longman, and Walter J. Longman, III; daughters Pamela Longman Szesny, and Giselle Longman; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, in the Heavenly Heights Baptist Church, Jacksonville with Pastor Noland giving the eulogy. Interment will follow with military honors in the Jacksonville National Cemetery, Jacksonville, Florida. A visitation will be held on Tuesday evening at the Heavenly Heights Baptist Church from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
