Wayne Hires, 88, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully in hospice care on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. Born in Taylor, Florida, on December 8, 1936, he was the son of the late Nathan and Verdie (Altman) Hires. Wayne was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, cherished for his kindness, caring spirit, and selfless nature.

Life and Legacy
Wayne grew up in Florida and graduated from Baldwin High School. He proudly served in the United States Air Force for nearly four years and later pursued his passion by attending Carpenter Trade School. After completing his training, Wayne worked as a carpenter for many years before retiring at age 62.

Wayne was a man of deep faith and spent many years involved in his church community, first at the West Side Church of Nazarene and later at the First Church of Nazarene. Outside of work and church, Wayne enjoyed building, reading, and spending time outdoors. Above all, he found great joy in being surrounded by his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he adored.

Wayne’s legacy will live on through his loving family, his faith, and his enduring acts of kindness.

Family
Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathleen L. Hires; son, Curtis Hires, who is survived by Melony; and siblings, Aurbie Hires, Thelma Hartley, Eugene Hires, Maggie Cruce, and Lawton Hires.

Wayne is survived by his children, Carolyn Moody (Haynes, deceased), Jeffrey Hires (LaRae); and siblings, LueBertha and Laverne; and several nephews and nieces. He was a proud grandfather to several grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Visitation and Services
A visitation for Wayne will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Cedar Bay Funeral Home, 405 New Berlin Road, Jacksonville, Florida. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Pine Grove Congregational Methodist Church, with Pastors John Hires and George Malone officiating, NE County Road 199, Raiford, Florida. Interment will immediately follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Raiford, Florida.
